Tragedy Exam

This exam covers Poetics, Oedipus the King, and Hamlet.  It is truly a test over tragedy so understanding Poetics is the key to doing well on much of the test as you'll need to apply the definition of tragedy to the two plays.  Things to be sure you understand:

  • Elements of tragedy--see your notes over Poetics, particularly discussion of the quiz
  • Greek theater--it is the beginning of drama--and Sophocles' part in it
  • How Oedipus illustrates those elements
  • Critical understanding of Oedipus
  • Close reading of Hamlet
  • How Hamlet fits into the elements of tragedy
  • Critical understanding of Hamlet (see your reading journal)

The format of the test will be a combination of long answer (worth 10 points each) and multiple choice (worth 1 point each):

  • Two long answers regarding Greek theater/Oedipus
  • AP-style multiple choice questions over Oedipus (in general)
  • AP-style multiple choice questions over a close reading of an excerpt of Hamlet
  • Two long answers regarding Hamlet

Bring your reading journal with you to class.  I will look them over for a "midterm check" that will be your midterm grade for 3rd quarter.
